First there were correspondence courses: you know–read a bunch of stuff, write a bunch of stuff, and your instructor mails you your grade. Sometimes in the setting of a correspondence course there was media involved.

16/11/2012 - A brief history of online learning.
This very brief history posted by Katie Lepi has a decidedly Canadian bias, but is still pretty informative, all the same. In fact it goes back as far as 1959 with the design of PLATO. I was pleased to see it referred to CYCLOPS.

Rapid learning or how to design long-distance training content quickly and simply: in other words, how to produce online pedagogy with the least effort? This is the difficult challenge which confronts the software vendors of e-learning. Our comparison table of software solutions dedicated to rapid learning will help you make your choice.
The principle of a rapid learning software is to build on existing support to build the course. This can be for example a PowerPoint document that will be converted into a flash animation to which you will add audio narration and quizzes. Its basic tools for e-learning are also creators of online questionnaires. Finally, there are movie screen solutions (screen-shot) to create tutorials by simulation or interactive demonstration. While the best solutions on the market incorporate all the above, some do offer only the conversion of "PPT to SWF”, or only software demonstrations with or without interactive simulations or moreover, generators of exercise. So be careful to compare the exploitation perimeter of each software. It is also important to note that the best can be exploited in the prior creations, authoring tools for more sophisticated productions.
As well as all other e-learning solutions, rapid learning packages must respect the SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004 and AICC in order to be used in LMS. Our comparison chart of rapid learning software allows you to measure performance index, reliability and ergonomy provided by the user community. While these programs can take charge without any support, it is often important not to leave "ball head" on this type of simple solution. But rather to seek advice in advance in order to consider your entire e-learning strategy because it will not be limited to simple rapid learning.
Our rapid learning comparison chart will help you find your way by presenting the satisfaction index of the user community.
